Zogenix And Astellas announce data published showing the benefits of SUMAVEL(TM) DosePro(TM) needle-free delivery system

Zogenix, Inc. and Astellas Pharma US, Inc. announced that positive results from two clinical studies of new SUMAVEL DosePro (sumatriptan injection) needle-free delivery system will be published in the November 2009 issue of Headache. The first study showed a rate of absorption of subcutaneous sumatriptan that has been previously shown to correlate with rapid and complete relief of migraine symptoms. The second showed that an overwhelming majority of patients successfully used the new needle-free system during a migraine attack on their first attempt.

Zolmitriptan nasal spray effective as acute treatment for cluster headache

Pain from cluster headaches is substantially relieved within half an hour after dosing with 5 to 10 mg of zolmitriptan nasal spray, according to an individual subject meta-analysis of two randomized, crossover trials. The 10-mg dose was significantly more effective than the lower dose and both doses were significantly more effective than placebo.

Forest Laboratories and Cypress Bioscience announce study shows patients treated with Savella experience improvements in pain and physical function

According to results from a large-scale, Phase III clinical trial, Savella® (milnacipran HCI) 100 mg/day (50 mg twice daily) demonstrated statistically significant and clinically meaningful concurrent improvements in pain, patient global assessment, and physical function. Savella is a selective serotonin and norepinephrine dual reuptake inhibitor that was approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration earlier this year for the management of fibromyalgia.

Combo pill an option for diabetes-related nerve pain

According to a new study, a single pill containing the pain relievers tramadol and acetaminophen (TA) is as effective as the drug gabapentin for treating diabetes-related nerve pain. Thus, the current findings support TA as a suitable alternative to gabapentin as a first-line therapy for painful diabetic neuropathy.

Pacira's Phase III study of EXPAREL(TM) meets primary pain relief endpoint

Pacira Pharmaceuticals, Inc. announced today that its Phase III study of its new analgesic EXPAREL(TM) in patients undergoing a bunionectomy procedure met its primary endpoint. The study showed a statistically significant reduction in area under the curve analysis of the NRS scores in the subjects receiving EXPAREL(TM) compared to placebo over the first 24 hours following surgery. The difference continued to be statistically significant through 36 hours.

King pain drug videos misleading

BioElectronics Corp. recently released results of a study compares the effects of ActiPatch® Therapy to acetaminophen in the form of Extra Strength Tylenol® for the treatment of Delayed Onset Muscle Soreness (DOMS). The results for the pilot section of this study were highly significant with the ActiPatch group scoring its average level of muscle soreness and discomfort at much lower levels compared to either the control group or the acetaminophen treatment group.
