 Pain Studies In The News

Cancer doctors score low on pain management
Source: Reuters
According to a new survey, many U.S. cancer doctors say they are good at managing their patients' pain, but most failed to choose the right treatment options in a test and say that figuring out the level of pain patients have is still a major barrier to care. The findings came from a follow-up to a survey that found a lack of good pain management among U.S. oncologists in 1990 and show that more work needs to be done to educate doctors about pain.

Long-term study sheds light on jaw pain disorders
November 2011 Source: University of Maryland Baltimore
People with disorders of long-term jaw pain were much more sensitive to mildly painful sensations elsewhere in the body, more aware of body sensations, and experienced greater heart rate increases under mild stress, according to a new study. The researchers report that chronic TMJD is at least partially linked to a person's perception of and ability to suppress pain, which is determined by the body's physiological regulatory systems.

Is the shocking prevalence of chronic pain true?
Source: Pain-Topics.org
Many readers have questioned the latest figure that 116 million American adults suffer from chronic pain, which represents more than a third of the total population. Yet, looking at the original source of this data, the evidence seems generally reliable and, furthermore, the U.S. is not unique in the world — chronic pain seems to be a truly huge problem of global proportions.

 Prescription Addiction, Diversion, and Abuse

Bono Mack: painkiller abuse in U.S. an 'epidemic'
December 6, 2011 Source: Desert Sun Washington
Rep. Mary Bono Mack said Monday her crusade against abuse of prescription painkillers does not mean denying such medicines to people such as late-stage cancer patients who truly need them. She said all she wants is for the health care system—and doctors especially—to be more aware of the potentially deadly ramifications of prescribing painkillers that give users a high. Doctors should not prescribe them for conditions that can be treated with less-powerful drugs, she said.

No painkillers please, we're British
November 2011 Source: Associated Press
In Britain, OxyContin is considered similar to morphine and used sparingly. Vicodin isn't even licensed. And remedies like ibuprofen are sold only in 16-pill packs. To avoid risks, including addiction, strong painkillers are often kept at arm's length from patients. Many British doctors say the country has a more conservative approach to doling out painkillers than in the U.S., where overdose deaths from powerful drugs including OxyContin and Vicodin, tripled over a decade, according to a government report there earlier this month.
