Opioid pain medications safe and effective when used appropriately
December 7, 2009 Source: Canadian Medical Association Journal
A survey conducted in 2007 and 2008 found that an estimated one in six Canadians suffer from chronic pain. Estimates place direct health care costs for Canada to be more than $6 billion per year for individuals suffering from chronic pain. People living with chronic pain deserve access to best practice pain management - including the proper use of opioid analgesics when indicated. Opioids can be a very safe and effective treatment for pain when used for the right reason by the right person. Any measures put into place to reduce the misuse of prescription opioids should not penalize the vast majority of people with pain who use these medications appropriately. [Story]

New study finds barriers to pain treatment in children with sickle cell disease
December 6, 2009 Source: Medical College of Wisconsin
A new study found a substantial variation in hydroxyurea utilization for pain and other sickle cell disease complications in children. Barriers to its use on the part of both providers and patients were also identified. Hydroxyurea was approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration for use in sickle cell disease patients in 1998. While hydroxyurea remains the standard of care for reducing these painful events in adults, little is known about its practice patterns in children. [Story]

Visceral Pain: Clinical, Pathophysiological and Therapeutic Aspects

Product Description
Visceral pain, or pain in the internal organs, is often quite difficult for the clinician to recognize promptly as its characteristics are often atypical and vary with time. Patients with visceral pain also often present with concurrent painful conditions in more than one internal organ; this can give rise to an intricate complex of symptoms which can be misleading if not accurately evaluated. Also, despite its frequency, the mechanisms behind pain in the internal organs are not fully understood, and this impacts negatively on therapy.
This concise pocketbook addresses the epidemiology and clinical characteristics of the major visceral pain phenomena, the fundamentals of their neurophysiological mechanisms and the principles of their treatment. It also provides overviews of current diagnostic and therapeutic guidelines on the conditions most commonly associated with visceral pain.

Gray K, Wegner DM.
Blaming god for our pain: human suffering and the divine mind.
Personality and social psychology review. 2009 Nov 19. [forthcoming]
In this article, the authors propose that God is seen as the ultimate moral agent, the entity people blame and praise when they receive anomalous harm and help. Support for this proposition comes from research on mind perception, morality, and moral typecasting. Interestingly, although people perceive God as the author of salvation, suffering seems to evoke even more attributions to the divine.
