Latino and white children might receive different pain treatment
February 8, 2010 Source: Health Behavior News Service
Differences might exist in the amount of pain medicine given to Latino and white children after surgery, found a new study. Although administration of non-opioid analgesics (such as acetaminophen) and opioid analgesics was similar between Latino and white children during surgery, after surgery, Latino children received 30 percent less opioid analgesics (morphine or morphine-like drugs) than white children did.

Study maps effects of acupuncture on the brain

A new study on the effects of acupuncture on the brain may provide an understanding of the complex mechanisms of acupuncture and could lead to a wider acceptability of the treatment. The study indicates that acupuncture has a significant effect on specific neural structures. When a patient receives acupuncture treatment, a sensation called deqi can be obtained; scientific analysis shows that this deactivates areas within the brain that are associated with the processing of pain.

The National Institutes of Health plans to provide web based training for pain management providers. This is a new program developed with funding from the National Institute on Drug Abuse. In a new study, 60 mg of Cymbalta® (duloxetine HCl) taken once daily significantly reduced chronic low back pain, as measured by the Brief Pain Inventory (BPI) average pain rating, compared with placebo.

FDA accepts Javelin Pharmaceuticals' Dyloject™ New Drug Application for formal review

Javelin Pharmaceuticals, Inc. today announced that its New Drug Application submitted on December 2, 2009 to the US FDA for its investigational product candidate, Dyloject™ (diclofenac sodium) Injection, has been accepted for formal review. If approved, Dyloject will be the first IV non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) marketed in the United States as a single agent for the management of acute moderate-to-severe pain in adults since ketorolac in 1990.

Group urges recall of drug for fibromyalgia
January 20, 2010 Source: Associated Press
A consumer advocacy group is asking government regulators to recall a drug they approved last year for a little-understood pain ailment, saying the pill can lead to dangerously high blood pressure. A letter Wednesday from Public Citizen calls on the Food and Drug Administration to pull Savella off the market, almost exactly a year after it was cleared to treat fibromyalgia.
