The mission of the American Academy of Pain Management is to advance the field of pain management and improve the lives of those in pain through an integrative model of care. The Academy accomplishes this by providing information and continuing education in an environment in which clinicians, representing a variety of disciplines, can network, share knowledge, and work collaboratively to achieve optimal patient care. The Academy supports its members, other pain practitioners, and those affected by pain, through advocacy on the state and federal levels.

In line with the principles of integrative medicine, integrative pain management:
  • Is patient-centered and reaffirms the importance of the relationship between practitioner and patient
  • Focuses on the whole person—mind, body, spirit, and in the context of the individual’s community/environment
  • Is informed by evidence
  • Makes use of, and brings together, all appropriate therapeutic approaches (both allopathic and complementary) and healthcare professionals to reduce pain and achieve optimal health and healing
