Léger Survey reports 84 per cent of Ontario physicians feel patients may be addicted to prescription painkillers
September 3, 2008
Prescription painkiller dependence is a serious problem in Ontario, according to the results of a new survey conducted by Léger Marketing polling 211 Ontario General Practitioners. The survey reports that the majority of Ontario physicians (84%) feel that their patients may be addicted to commonly-prescribed painkillers (i.e., opioid-based such as oxycodone, morphine, meperidine and acetaminophen-codeine. College freshmen: Pain killers and stimulants less risky than cocaine; more risky than marijuana
September 3, 2008
First year college students believe that occasional nonmedical use of prescription pain killers and stimulants is less risky than cocaine, but more risky than marijuana or consuming five or more alcoholic beverages every weekend, according to a new study published in the September issue of Prevention Science. Researchers from Boston University's Slone Epidemiology Center have found that in a given week, over 10 million Americans are taking opioids, and more than 4 million are taking them regularly (at least five days per week, for at least four weeks). Story

Alpharma Inc., announced that the United States Food and Drug Administration has advised the Company that its New Drug Application for EMBEDA™ (morphine sulfate extended-release with sequestered naltrexone hydrochloride) Capsules has been accepted and designated for priority review. The priority review status provides for a review period of six months from the date of submission. Story

Covidien announces agreement with Purdue Pharma L.P. enabling launch of oxycodone hydrochloride extended-release tablets
September 02, 2008
Covidien, a leading global provider of healthcare products, today announced that its subsidiary, Mallinckrodt Inc., has reached an agreement with Purdue Pharma L.P. to end a patent infringement lawsuit between them. In connection with the agreement, Purdue has agreed to grant Mallinckrodt a royalty-bearing license to sell limited quantities of oxycodone hydrochloride extended-release tablets for a limited period of time ending in 2009. As a result, Mallinckrodt expects to begin selling oxycodone hydrochloride extended-release tablets before the end of September 2008. Story

In a study of 906 men and women who had traveled more than once by plane, nearly 6 percent reported that they experienced headaches associated with flying. Based on 3.3 billion seats available each year on commercial flights, with 70 percent occupancy, researchers estimate that more than 100 million people suffer from flight-associated headaches annually. A recent survey showed that 88% of people who had flown in North America in the last year reported that they had back or neck pain--or both--after a typical flight on United, American Airlines, Delta, JetBlue, or any of the other major carriers.
