Botox relieves pain caused by migraines

Allergan, Inc. reports that it has completed a top-line analysis of its two Phase III clinical trials exploring the use of BOTOX(botulinum toxin type A) for the prophylactic treatment of headache in adults suffering from chronic migraine - i.e., headaches and/or migraines that occur on 15 or more days each month. In both studies, patients receiving BOTOX(R) treatments scored astatistically significant higher improvement in quality of life vs. patients receiving placebo injections (p less than 0.001 in both studies). Alpharma announces positive results from pivotal phase III efficacy trial on EMBEDA(morphine sulfate extended-release with sequestered naltrexone hydrochloride)

According to the study findings, patients who were taking ALO-01 capsules reported significantly more effective pain relief, as measured by mean change in the weekly Brief Pain Inventory (BPI) Average Pain Intensity Score from baseline to the 12-week endpoint of the study, compared to patients who were taking placebo. Additionally, 72.5 percent of patients reported taking ALO-01 experienced pain relief of at least 30 percent from baseline, compared to 57.8 percent patients given placebo. Data also suggests that naltrexone did not leak out of the capsules, and there was no increased risk of opioid withdrawal versus placebo.
