Joanna Katzman, MD, MSPH, President
Joanna Katzman, MD, MSPH, President, an Associate Professor in Neurology, is the Director of the University of New Mexico Pain Center and Co- Director of the UNM Project ECHO Chronic Pain Program, which have received the 2011 American Pain Society Clinical Centers of Excellence Award. Dr. Katzman is currently working with the Army’s Department of Defense to roll-out Army Pain ECHO throughout the Regional Medical Commands worldwide. Dr. Katzman currently resides on the New Mexico Governor’s Council for “Prescription Drug Misuse and Overdose Prevention”. She has trained over 1,400 clinicians from New Mexico in the last 9 months in continuing medical education courses on “Pain and Addictions”. She formally assisted the Veterans Affairs with ECHO Pain replication (SCAN-ECHO), and presently works with the Indian Health Service’s National Center for Tele-behavioral Health as they begin to replicate ECHO Pain and Addictions. Dr. Katzman has served on the Institute of Medicine (IOM) Committee for Gulf War and Health, “Treating Chronic Multisymptom Illness” and she is currently serving on a second IOM committee for Gulf War and Health defining a Consensus Case Definition for Chronic Multisympton Illness.
Paul Christo, MD, Secretary
Paul Christo, MD, Secretary, is an is an Associate Professor in the Division of Pain Medicine at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine. He served as Director of the Multidisciplinary Pain Fellowship Program for 8 years, and the Blaustein Pain Treatment Center for 5 years at the Johns Hopkins Hospital.
He hosts a nationally syndicated SIRIUS XM radio talk show on overcoming pain called Aches and Gains. His show has earned him the John and Emma Bonica Public Service Award from the American Pain Society, recognizing distinguished contributions to the field of pain medicine through public education, dissemination of information, and public service. Dr. Christo was also selected as a Mayday Pain and Society Fellow, and a “Hero” by The Pain Community, a patient advocacy association.
Dr. Christo is an invited lecturer both nationally and internationally, serves on 4 journal editorial boards and reviews for several others, has published more than 100 articles and book chapters, co-edited 3 textbooks on pain, and actively teaches medical students, residents, and pain fellows. He has been a course director or coordinator for many national CME (continuing medical education) conferences that focus on educating both specialists and generalists on important aspects of pain diagnosis and treatment.
He has served on Advisory Boards for the American Academy of Pain Medicine, American Society of Anesthesiologists, the International Association for the Study of Pain, and the American Pain Society. He has also earned an MBA from the Johns Hopkins Carey Business School in Health Care Management.
Kevin T. Galloway, BSN, MHA, Treasurer
Kevin T. Galloway, BSN, MHA, Colonel, US Army (Retired), Treasurer, is a Senior Project Manager at the Defense and Veterans Center for Integrative Pain Management (DVICPM) in Rockville, Maryland. Kevin recently retired from the United States Army after a distinguished 27 year career as an Army Nurse Corps officer. His career included a multitude of clinical and administrative assignments, in fixed facility hospitals and military field hospitals, in Emergency Departments, Ambulatory Care Clinic, and Troop Medical Clinics. He deployed as medical support for combat, humanitarian and peace-keeping operations in Saudi Arabia, Croatia, Iraq, Korea and Honduras. During his last assignment in the Army’s Office of The Surgeon General, he was the Chief of Staff for the 2010 Department of Defense 2010 Pain Management Task Force and subsequently served as Director of the Army’s Comprehensive Pain Management Program from 2011-2014. He is a recipient of the Order of Military Merit and the Army Surgeon General’s “A” Proficiency designator, an award used to recognize the accomplishments of senior medical leaders who have made significant contributions to the Army Medical Department.
Alfred Anderson, MD, DC, Past President
Alfred Anderson, MD, DC, Past President, is the Medical Director of Medical Pain Management in Minneapolis, Minnesota. Dr. Anderson is also a member of the Minnesota Board of Medical Practice and a fellow of the Federation of State Medical Boards. He currently serves on the Board of Directors of the American Academy of Pain Management and is an author and section editor of the seventh edition of Weiner’s Pain Management.
Robert Alan Bonakdar, MD, FAAFP, Past President
Robert Alan Bonakdar, MD, Past President, is Director of Pain Management at the Scripps Center for Integrative Medicine in La Jolla, California and a member of the Scripps Green Hospital Pain Management Committee. He also serves as Assistant Clinical Professor (Voluntary) at the University of California, San Diego School of Medicine. Dr. Bonakdar completed a fellowship in integrative medicine at Scripps Clinic, focusing on integrative pain management. He also completed the UCLA Acupuncture Course for Physicians and a Richter Fellowship in Southeast Asia, where he studied acupuncture, tai chi, and mind-body practices. His current clinical and research interests include novel approaches to pain management including dietary supplementation and biostimulation using microcurrent, laser, auricular, and acupuncture therapies.

Gerald Q. Greenfield, Jr., MD, FACS, Past President is Board certified in orthopaedic surgery and has sub-specialty training in spinal surgery and non-surgical spinal care.
Christian D. González, MD, Director At Large
Christian D. González, MD, Director At Large, is the Director of Pain Medicine Aventura Spine Wellness Center, in Aventura, Florida. Previously, he was Director of Pain Medicine at the University of Massachusetts School of Medicine in Worcester. He completed an anesthesiology residency at Baylor College of Medicine and then a pain medicine fellowship at Harvard Medical School-Massachusetts General Hospital. His research focuses on interventional spine techniques. Dr. González also chairs the Academic Taskforce for the American Society of Interventional Pain Physicians. He has led multiple interventional workshops in the United States and Latin America.
W. Clay Jackson, MD, DipTh, Vice-President of the Board
W. Clay Jackson, MD, DipTh, Vice-President of the Board, is Clinical Assistant Professor of Family Medicine and Psychiatry at the University of Tennessee College of Medicine in Memphis, Tennessee, where he maintains a private practice in family and palliative medicine. He is also the Medical Director of Comprehensive Primary Care, and of Methodist Hospice and Palliative Services. Dr. Jackson is the Associate Fellowship Director of Palliative Medicine at the University of Tennessee College of Medicine. He is board certified in family practice and hospice and palliative medicine, and is a frequent presenter at national conferences on the treatment of chronic pain. His work has been published in a number of leading academic journals and he is a recipient of numerous teaching honors.
Michael Kurisu, DO, Director At Large
Michael Kurisu, DO, Director At Large: The internal capacity to heal is at the cornerstone of Dr. Kurisu’s approach to medicine. He is the Clinical Director of the Center for Integrative Medicine and in charge of the Osteopathic consult clinics for UC San Diego. He is on faculty on several different medical schools and lectures nationally and internationally on Osteopathic and Integrative medicine. Dr. Kurisu has extensive training in Osteopathic manual techniques and uses a “Hands-on” approach to diagnosis and treatment of his patients.
Arthur S. Roberts, DDS, MD, Director At Large
Arthur S. Roberts, DDS, MD, Director At Large, has been in private practice for nearly 4 decades. He lectures nationally and internationally on a variety of subjects including oral medicine, craniofacial pain, dental sleep medicine, and evidence-based health care. He has held positions as the attending and consulting staff at various hospitals for more than 35 years. Dr. Roberts is active in the American Academies of Oral Medicine, Orofacial Pain, Pain Management and Dental Sleep Medicine. He serves as an Adjunct Clinical Assistant Professor, Oral Medicine, Oral and Maxillofacial Pathology/Medicine/Radiology, IUSD, and adjunct faculty of Anesthesiology, Critical Care, and Pain Management at the College of Medicine and Veterinary Medicine, University of Edinburgh, UK.
Maggie Buckley, Patient Liaison
Maggie Buckley, Patient Liaison has been a volunteer patient advocate for more than 20 years while living with the chronic pain condition Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome. She currently serves on the board of The Pain Community (PainCommunity.org) and has previously served on the board of American Pain Foundation and Ehlers-Danlos National Foundation. Additionally, she has volunteered with Northern California Pain Care Initiative, EDS Today, National Fibromyalgia Association. She has an MBA in accounting with experience in banking and business management. She has testified at state and federal policy hearings, spoken at conferences and in the media, written articles and coached hundreds of people to self-advocate for better care.
John Garzione, PT, DPT, Director at Large
John E. Garzione, PT, DPT, Director at Large has over 40 years experience as a Physical Therapist. He is the owner of Chenango Therapeutics in Norwich, New York, an outpatient physical therapy clinic; which specializes in the treatment of a variety of persistent pain conditions. He has presented numerous continuing education courses on Pain Management, Electrotherapy, and Iontophoresis. His clinical research focus is with treatment of chronic pain using integrated Neuroplastic approaches.
Dr. Garzione is a founding member and past President of the Pain Management Special Interest Group of the Orthopaedic Section of the APTA. He has served on the advisory board of Orthopaedic Physical Therapy Practice, Ithaca College Physical Therapy Department and is a consultant in Electrotherapy for DJO Global, Vista, Calif.
